It is my firm belief that India and Pakistan (and Bangladesh)
must reunite under a strong secular modern minded government which does not
tolerate religious extremism, and crushes it with an iron hand. I know this
will not happen in the near future, because those who divided us will not let us easily reunite. But I am planting a seed
which will grow up into a tree and bear fruit in 15-20 years. It will not bear
fruit immediately, but unless it is planted now, there will be no fruit in the
future. This will require patiently educating the people for a long time about
the truth.
You must be mad at me for calling Pakistan a fake,
artificial country. Let me clarify that I believe that 99% people of all
countries are good, and therefore 99% people of Pakistan ( and India) are good.
I am a disciple of the great philosopher Rousseau who believed that most people
are good. However, most people are also simpletons, and can be befooled and
taken for a ride by wicked people. That is what was done by the British to our
people (see online 'History in the Service of Imperialism' by B.N.Pandey).
There was zero% communalism in 1857, i.e. before the Mutiny, but after the
Mutiny the British decided that the only way to control India was to spread
communal hatred between Hindus and Muslims. This divide and rule policy was
followed relentlessly and systematically by the British after 1857. The British
Collector used to secretly call the Hindu Pandit, give him some money, and ask
him to speak against Muslims, and similarly he would secretly call the Muslim
Maulvi, give him money, and ask him to speak against Hindus. Communal riots
were artificially engineered. This was done year after year, decade after
decade. In 1909 separate electorates were introduced by the Minto-Morley 'Reforms'.
All this resulted in the horrors of Partition (read the stories about Partition
by Manto). Even after 1947 there are wicked people who are spreading
communalism.
Unless we reunite there will never be peace. The 2
nation theory on the basis of which Pakistan was created is bogus. Whenever I
meet my Pakistani friends I feel no different from them, we speak the same
language, we look like each other, and we share our love for Urdu. How are we
two different nations ? I will never accept this fraud. It was high time
someone had to speak the truth, and it seems it was for me to bell the cat.
Read my article " The Truth about Pakistan "
The reunification of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh: I compleletly respect and do not question the sincerity of Katju sb and several others views in India who want the reunification of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. But I would like to inform all those good people how damaging their views are far the peace between India and Pakistan. I would like to inform you that in Pakistan there is not even a single community or group of people who desire the reunification despite all the problems people are having with the Pakistani state. You need to understand, right from the times of partition religious parties and hawkish elements in Pakistan have been feeding the people of Pakistan that India has not accepted the reality of Pakistan, citing the reunification statements of Congress leaders, that Pakistan is facing an existential threat from India, that India wants to eat Pakistan back in its fold. In such a situation the repetition of reunification mantra is immensely damaging for the peace and normalization of relations between India and Pakistan. It strengthens the position of extremists and hatemongers while damages the efforts of peace-mongers immensely. Therefore, I request all the friends of the people of Pakistan in India to take this reunification mantra out of their minds or if it is not possible for them at least desist from putting it up openly. Pakistan is now a reality which is hear to stay. Transforming SAARC into something like EU is more feasible and desirable than uniting Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
ReplyDeleteWE have enough home born ailments to bother and need not bear the garbage of a defunct ideology. Pakistan is a nation born out of an erroneous and malicious theocratic ideology and Bangladesh is hounded by religious extremism and poverty.
ReplyDeleteThe present Indian generation have no affinity to such alien idea. Moreover we have nothing to do with the tribal areas and the life style there ( NWFP).
And with people like you who are from the pre-partition era the idea is a fancy but not wise anymore.
There will be no takers for this idea that I do not hesitate to term as outlandish.
@Saed
ReplyDeleteJustice Katju has clearly stated that reunification is not going to happen overnight, not at least in his life-time. He talks of a 20 - 50 year time frame. By that time most people who were infected with the virus of communal politics and who have personal experience of the horrors of Partition would have passed on. A new generation in both countries would be there and it would be ready to take a fresh look at things, to assess historical blunders of their forefathers and to correct matters so as to ensure a better future for themselves and their children. It is their pragmatism that will bring India and its two broken pieces together.
And there won't be any force involved. Indian army is not just going to take over Pakistan and colonize it. That is not the idea at all. This coming together will happen as a result of the acute perception of mutual benefit in coming together.
Today because Pakistanis are fed on a false diet of India-hatred, they have a fat and parasitic military on their hands that gobbles up the resources needed to uplift the poor in their country. Another fallout is the jihadis which the Pakistani army has been rearing with the intention of loosening them upon India at some point in the future. These jehadis now have turned on Pakistan itself and threaten to shred the secular fabric of that nation's major institutions.
You must not forget that like India, Pakistan too inherited a secular state and it was the intention of Jinnah to keep it so. But false propaganda about an Islamic identity slowly began to erode the secularity of Pakistani institutions, so much so that now it threatens to pull down the entire Pakistani society to medieval times.
The middle classes who still uphold secular values are today a quiet lot, but as stability progress as a result of the calming of the war in Afghanistan in the coming years and as democratic institutions take root, the middle classes will gradually gain in power and will be able to thwart the jihadi agenda. It is in the interest of the middle classes to be on friendly terms with India as India could help strengthen their hands against their jihadi adversaries. India can do this not at an official level, but indirectly through trade, soft power, and tourism.
The fundamental truth is that there is nothing different between Pakistanis and Indians at the cultural, linguistic, ethnic, racial, and religious levels. Pakistani ideologists know this quite well, which is why they spend great efforts to drill into the minds of Pakistanis a hatred for India. Take this hatred out of Pakistani minds and they are like any Indian.
Once Pakistanis realise this, they will voluntarily want to join hands with India to face the world at mutually beneficial terms.

DeleteI am in general agreement with the premise of this post in that we need to stop quarreling with one another for the sake of peace and prosperity of everyone. But instead of forcing a unification to attain peace we should first push to attain mutual peace and build trust and when this is achieved, then perhaps discuss unification. Currently unification may seem a distant dream or even an impossibility but at least we can aim to live in peace next to each other.
ReplyDeleteKatju's dream world has no bounds.
ReplyDeleteEven after sixty years Kashmir is still burning.
There seems no end to NE sufferings.
No empathy with Darjeeling cause.
Telangana 'sentiment' was stoked time and again for political gains.
Despite identical culture Vidharbha wants to separate.
Can we handle such reunification and problems arising out of it?
At least not until congress party is eliminated from Indian politics.
No! Not on the account of appeasements. It is not capable of solving any important issue in the country.
@Wnat_is_not_said
ReplyDeleteThe Kashmir problem at least would immediately solved by reunification.
Sorry बालसुब्रमण्यम sir,
DeleteIMO, reuniting with the other half is not the highest priority of Kashmir movement. Nor it is 'Pro-Pakistani'. It is rather 'No to India'.
Can reunification afford autonomy to united Kashmir? Just another insoluble sediment for next century. :-)
Thinking of resolving many home borne problems is of much more importance than thinking of such reunification. We have still not recovered from the vicious cycle of poverty and illiteracy. thanks to the political will, even after six decades of independence we are languishing with problems we could have eradicated. Let's bring our house in order before we can accommodate more.
ReplyDeleteMr. Katju's dream is quite admirable but it 'll have more hurdles from people in India who wanted to create mirror image of Pakistan instead of a Secular state. Problems faced Vidhrabha & Telangana can not be compared with Pakistan. Only a few 4-5 New states will be added to 'United States of India'.. Dat should be our GOAL & not just a DREAM :)

ReplyDeletePakistani society is just like what Nazis were thinking that they were the supreme race, they r going on same path, pakis calls themselves either central asians or arabs origin. They dont even accept indian origin and how can we say that we look alike, speaks alike. In their terms we are ugly and black
ReplyDeleteToday I discovered a commonality between India and Pakistan. This may help realize Katju's dream.
ReplyDeleteBoth governments believe in talks, dialogue, debate.
Pakistan administers Sarbjit's killing. But preaches India that we can resolve problems through talks.
Same way Indian government perpetrates scam after scam. But tells opposition to debate in Parliament.
Yes! India is going Pakistan way. Soon we will be another rogue country in Asia. Later we can become one rogue country.
I agree with this - This will eventually happen. Why am I so sure of this? How many times have our political bundries changed in the past 1000 years? Which country has maintained a constant political boundary for over 200 years? This is not you owing me money that I must get back in a few months. This is a matter between countries and governments - we can be content waiting for a century.
ReplyDeletemany times in the history many political bundries have changed in the past 200 years? No country could maintain a constant political boundary in the past.
DeleteBut now the future is not of changing boudaries but the insignificance of political or racial divisions in a globalised technological world.
But the collective ego(emotional thinking) may not change very fast as technology because a human is contorlled by their emotional intelligece (ego)which holds many prejudice going back to their tradition and faith.

ReplyDeleteI like this post because its about re-uniting the INDIA.
ReplyDelete"which does not tolerate religious extremism, and crushes it with an iron hand" as you are saying yourself to crush the things that are not in favor of uniting the country then i feel you should also say something on ASSAM RITES. There was also similar kind of thing as "Bangladesi's" creates all the rough envirnment that burn Assam to Bangalore to Mumbai. You should also say about when a large group people spoiled peace and broke statue on 'AMAR-JAWAN' (I dont recall but it was happens in Mumbai azad park).
By the way i like your thought to reunite the INDIA and other countries that must be part of India because without India these countries cant survive because the base of forming of these countries are greedy thoughts of some politicians. Even Indians dis not want this partition in 1947 as some of political just signed some papers and created a border between India.
We all must try to get reunite our conutry

ReplyDeletewhat you have said is a very bold and correct statement. But for it to be successful- you have to get the people of pakistan to back and support it- people like najim sethi and other broad-minded persons- even nawaz sharif is amenable to india- you have to convince the isi- and kayani to back your proposal- then you have the problem of selling the idea to indians - who also are not so keen to get back the 180 million losers-
ReplyDeleteI want to tell justice Katju-What he has written is good to read and specialy being a sindhi i too wish for the same, but alas if wishes horses one would ride them.

I believe in 1971 India should have merged Bangladesh into India. This would have partially cleansed us of the damage the Two nation theory has bought unto the Indian subcontinent. It would also allow a celebration of Bengali as a language and a culture.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone, rationalist Indian speaking:
ReplyDeleteI don't think we should be carrying forward what was prior to 1947 and what could have been in an alternate reality.
From little education that I have one thing is clear to me, independence and desire for sovereignty is a drug for humankind.
Our great leaders shouldn't have bartered the unified India for their personal goals of becoming Prime-ministers and Cabinet ministers of independent India in 1947.
But once that line was crossed... it is impossible to push on for the reunification logic. Yeah if this thoughts were thought 20 years ago, things could have been different, but now as there have been 2-3 generations past the generations who faced the horrors of partition and they have become complacent in calling themselves as they are now along with doctored national histories in their history books in all 3 nations have, the essential element of we have been lost.
Practically, we, India is the largest of the 3 states... so any initiative of unifying all 3 from us will be seen as the predator praying on the weak. If at all there has to be anything in the lines of thought of Katju sir, it has to come from the direction of Pakistan and Bangladesh. I don't think there is any way it may happen as they are recognized sovereign nations, they would value their independence above everything.
But a much better proposition, is an unified SAARC Union, like the European union. It's practical. It's more like adapting to the changing circumstances. I personally believe with increase in collaboration in Indian Subcontinent, wonders are just a bend away.
If anyone atall is interested in what I have to say, we should dream of a SAARC union scenario in 10-15 years, not a re-unified India, which is never going to happen.
Katju sir is a learned man, his passionate cause touches the heart, but in my humble opinion it's not practical at all to proceed in that line.
Thank you (to all who would read my opinion :P)
Best regards.
So far i have seen this reunite dreams came from old generation from India only and not from Pakistan, you will not find any Pakistani had posted such blog and big surprise is in India people who dream for reunite, they were in power to do so during 1960 and 1971 war but lost the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteAnd why we only talk about just Pakistan and Bangladesh, it's not only these countries are separated from United India, British had partitioned Afghanistan,Burma , Nepal , Bhutan , and Srilanka from United India much before Pakistan
