I hold Bengalis in high respect. They are a highly intelligent, highly cultured people, with great contributions in literature, science, philosophy, social reforms, etc
Unfortunately, many of them have some blind spots. It is diifficult to talk rationally with many Bengalis about some personalities whom they have converted into icons or holy cows, e.g. Tagore or Subhas Chandra Bose. Even the slightest criticism of these persons invokes a torrent or barrage of invectives and vituperations.
I remember when I was a Judge of Allahabad High Court I was sitting with some other Judges, one of whom was a Bengali, at the house of one of my colleagues. I mentioned my view that Subhas Chandra Bose was a Japanese agent. This so infuriated the Bengali Judge that he started shouting and raving almost like a madman, and so I quickly apologized so as not to break up the party.
But why should Bengalis go crazy if someone rationally criticizes Tagore and Bose ? Are they the private property of Bengalis.?
I have already mentioned my view about Tagore on my blog justicekatju.blogspot.in in which I have said that Tagore was objectively a British stooge, who had been built up by the British ( through their agent Yeats ) so as to divert literature from the revolutionary direction Sharad Chandra Chattopadhyaya was taking it ( see his Pather Dabi ) towards harmless and nonsensical spiritualism and mysticism ( see Gitanjali, Agni Beena Bajao Tumi, etc ) so as not to harm British interests.
I had also called Bose objectively a Japanese agent, in one of my blogs.
Today I read in the newspapers that Mamata Banerjee has decided to throw open the state government's files on ' Netaji '.
In my opinion this is just a diversionary populist measure to divert attention from the real problems of Bengalis ( and other Indians ) of poverty, unemployment, healthcare, price rise, malnourishment, etc.
Moreover, it is high time for Bengalis ( and other Indians ) to make a rational assessment of this ' national icon ' ( as Mamata described him ).
In Germany, Bose not only hobnobbed with Hitler but even with Himmler, two of the most evil men in history, ( their photographs can be seen on the internet ) responsible for sending millions to gas chambers. He wanted to organize the Indian soldiers captured by the Germans, to fight along with the Nazis. But when Hitler showed no interest, Bose went to Japan and raised his ragtag 'Azad Hind Fauj ' to fight with Japanese support against the British army.
In my opinion Bose was a highly ambitious person, and he became a Japanese agent because neither Gandhi nor Hitler had given him any ' bhaav ', so he thought that the only alternative left was to ally with Japan.
The Japanese fascists used Bose in their fight against the British, but the moment his utility was over they would probably have bumped him off.
Does anybody think that the Japanese fascist imperialists would have given freedom to India if they had defeated the British ? No, they would have made India their colony ( as they made Korea, Manchuria and other parts of China, Vietnam, etc ) and looted us. If we resisted, the Japanese would assuredly have massacred our people, as they did to the people of Shanghai, Nanking, etc ( see on Youtube visual accounts of these massacres ).
If Bose was a great freedom fighter, why did he give up the fight against the British the moment the Japanese surrendered ? He should have carried on a guerilla war against the British, the way the Chinese Eighth Route Army fought against the Japanese. In guerilla war you fight with the weapons of the enemy, by snatching them from him. The fact that he did not do so shows that there was nothing in the man. First he tried to become an agent of the Nazis, but they rebuffed him. Then he became an agent of the Japanese, who accepted him as their loyal running dog.
Some people support Bose's alliance with the Japanese by saying that an enemy's enemy is one's friend. In the real, practical, world, this maxim cannot be of universal application. Moreover, one can understand alliance with Japan if there was a possibility that such an alliance could have given us real freedom. But there was no such possibilty. Even if the Japanese, with I.N.A. support had defeated the British, they would never have given us freedom, but converted India into their colony. The very nature of the then fascism prevailing in Japan makes this evident.
My assessment of Bose is that he was an over ambitious, confused person, who to satisfy his ambition and ego was prepared even to ally with the devil, like a Faust. It is high time Bengalis ( and others ) realize this

DeleteThe reality is that this is understood by all people who are honest to their conscious self. Unfortunately, we are a society of cowards who do not have the courage to call a spade a spade. We keep accusing our slavery for this kind of a slavish mind. Again there are no dearth of fanatics in our society who could harm any one in their moment of anger caused by instigation by some clever fellows. So, those with the practical approach keep quiet.Frankly it is not yet time for telling the truths. Truths can't be palatable to the immature minds.

Your resume is a tool with one specific purpose: to win an interview. If it does what the fantasy resume did, it works. If it doesn't, it isn't an effective resume. A resume is an advertisement, nothing more, nothing less. Dear Sir kindly give response to some of my historical queries:-. Do you think that some lakhs of Britishers could rule over crores of Indians by their muscular or military power? It was a very gradual process which took almost 100 years. Do u think making a colony is so easy that a military could defeat us? Would Indians have just surrendered to japan? What is the rationale behind your argument.
ReplyDeleteWith due regard,i beg to differ from your assessment of Netaji Subhas Bose.During American freedom struggle french helped the american against the British and George Washington had no hesitation to take the assistance,French did not colonize USA despite being a colonial imperialist force no lesser evil than the Britishers. In European history as well as in world history this kind of thing happened in many occasions. So Subahs Bose was not in any confusion. What could have happened that if Japan would have won that is the matter of another discussion and debate. In domestic or geo-politics many decisions are taken on the basis of rational assessment or assumption, many times those became right or wrong, but that does not mean we should not do anything with particular calculation.let me remind you there was another great freedom fighter Mr.Rashbehari Bose who was the main catalytic factor behind the formation of Azad HIND FOUZ. So Subhas was not wrong to have that kind of alignment with the Japanese. Also i would like to add that you told about Pather dabi, One of the revolutionary literatures, many people believe that the main character of that literature resembles Rashbehari Bose,Secondly i would like to point out Japan had a cultural link with India in term of Buddhism since the ancient age.Germany was against the British,so there was no wrong if he had met Himmler or Hitler.Politics of convenience rejects any particular idea of enemy or friend as it means to serve the purpose not any particular ideology. When we pass a judgement on some historical personality we have to consider all the available facts and figures. Subhas was not a fool that he would become a Japanese agent or let his country become a Japanese colony. You would remember Gadar party was founded in San-Francisco,USA,in 1913.So can we say it was american stooge? No one has any problem with any discussion as long as it happens on the basis of facts and figures without any stereotype. You have many times mentioned why Subhas Bose did not continue Guerrilla warfare against the British,it is simple as there was no Japanese back up it would have impossible to conduct that kind of warfare as USA,SOVIETS,FRENCH all were on British side while both Hitler and Mussolini were perished ,they were unstoppable.Next important point is that there was a propaganda war against INA depicting it as Imperial Nippon Army instead of Indian National Army.Subahs Bose was a true patriot,he named Andaman and Nicobar Island as Swahid dweep and Swaraj dweep. His ambition was to have the Britishers out of the country. He left lucrative ICS job for which he toiled hard. You may question his wisdom or you can have different point of view regarding his process of achieving independence, but terming him as a Japanese agent is wrong.

I am open to listen to facts, but your inferences are somehow biased towards terming him as a selfish man and belittle his personality. You judging the situations before time as to what would have happened, repeatedly, shows that. In my opinion no one can say what would have happened if INA with japanese support have defeated the British. At Least the Britishers would have been gone.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to read the other comments if they were in english.
Mukesh
1. Bose was ready to deal with the 3rd devil - Stalin, too. In fact, he first went to Moscow, and then to Berlin.
ReplyDelete2. He was being used as a token liberator by the Germans and Japanese.
3. INA's original founder (Mohan Singh) himself got disgrunteled with the Japanese.
4. INA's size was a miniscule (30,000 POWs) as compared to the Japanese army that took part in the Burma compaign. They played little combat role in Burma.
5. The protests after INA trials were organized by political leaders - There were no spontaneous mass protests, revolts, desertions when INA/Japan reached Kohima and Imphal.
In light of these facts:
1. His siding with the evil side is morally questionable.
2. Even from a utilitarian point of view, his siding with the "enemy's enemy" achieved little.
Haters will be haters.. learn some history before babbling like a child,

ReplyDeleteGood Job Justice Katju.
ReplyDeleteI guess its you being a justice for most part of your life it comes to you naturally to you to see the truth from piles of Bullshit, and false glorification of a person.
Very little people in India do critical thinking and research to find the truth, but rather would like to selectively read opinions of (white skinned) and call it proof. (We could see that in Arnab’s show)
Congratulations for your courage to call a spade a spade knowing that you are throwing a stone at hornet’s nest and also for firmly standing behind the fact, You are a rare species.
Of all the things he did, he did not have one source to qoute. What do you mean by he called a spade a spade? Or may be it is no more a matter of pride for people to give up their lives for their country? He only generalised, he's always been generalising. He's deluded.
DeleteYou sir, are a deluded old man. Sorry to say, but you've lost your mind. You are nothing but the American stooge. All I've seen you do on your Facebook page is sing praise of the Americans and blame everything on the Indian Government.
ReplyDeleteYou've lost all respect in the eyes of the nation, you've proved it to the world that you are a stooge, you're a stooge of America and Nehru of course, who again was a man of dubious nature. You've conjured up your own facts, which are surely not based on any intel report, you do not even have facts about the second world war, all you did was generalise a few nations. Sir, I've respected you for your years of service in the Indian judiciary, but to be very honest, you haven't contributed anything more to the country's plight. All you did, still do is criticise the Government and belittle our national heroes. I hope you find your sanity soon, or migrate to America for the best. Since, that is the only country you believe practices democracy, even though they've always been using autocratic means to scare smaller countries and destabilising Governments. It's a shame, that a man of your stature could ultimately turned out to be a stooge.
Though Mr katju has blocked me on Twitter, I concur with him on this point. Subash Bose was a man who had all the characters needed to be a dictator. Even during his Congress days, he would stage spectacle at Congress sessions for self-aggrandizement. One one occasion, he celebrated his elevation into the post of Congress President by entering to the venue on a chariot driven by 10s of bullocks. I think it was around 50 or so!
ReplyDeleteHe also considered Musolini his ideological guru! With that credential he reached Berlin to hobnob with Hitler! is this a man who could have lead us? He had no sense of means to achieve the end! I would rather hold Surendra Sai, Baaji Raut, Khudi Ram, Bhagat Singh, Ashfaqullah Khan, Rajguru, Chandrashekhar Azad at high esteem than this man! These souls fought and died for Indian freedom wihiut compromising with just means to the end.
Netaji instead behaved as a slave to Hitler and cruel japs! How a sensible person could not judge these people? These people massacre people to win nations after nation. Japs were so cruel in all of their military victories in entire Asia. And sill, Netaji could think that Japs will hand over India to him! A megalomaniac in the making can only think like that.
If you really are interested to know what Japs were capable of, delve into what they did particularly in Chinese cities of Beijing and Nanking!
With such a evil, Netaji saw reason!
katju made a very pertinant point when he pointed out that Netaji abandoned the cause when Japs were defeated. Look at Bhagat Singh and him!
One was purely interested in freedom, the other was in him self!
You expressed your opinion that an individual's freedom of speech has to be harmonized with the public interest while criticizing Rushdie but you went on stating "90 per cent of Indians are idiots". doesn't that show you as Hypocrite.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Bose initially saw Hitler as a radical change model for India there were fundamental differences in there opinion. Hiltler was not interested in freeing India (probably he saw a possibility of future friendship with the British or wanted to focus more on war with Allies and invade Russia) on the other Bose had all discussion with Hitler based on condition that India would be set independent. In fact Bose had asked Hitler to withdraw his statement in Mein Kampf that he preferred to see India under the British than under any other country which Hitler refused. The little success that Bose had in Germany is due some favor of some of nazi seniors like Himmler who liked Boses' idea. However as soon as Bose learned about Hitler's plan of invading Russia and other military aggressiveness Bose made a rather hasty exit from Germany. Bose also openly attacked the invasion of Russia, and had called it an act of unprovoked aggression.. Do you call this hobnobbing with Hitler and Himmler?
Bose was much welcomed in Japan. He had meetings with Toji and many Generals who supported the cause of Bose. They allowed Bose to develop a provisional government. The Japanese were, and still are, fans of Bose for the courage, inspiration and dedication that he displayed. They equipped the INA and provided arms, ammunition and aircraft. Bose was not such a stupid leader that he would not be guessing about imperialistic plan of Japan. He must have understood the reality that even if Japan betrays they would not be able to keep such a big India under their empire when three big allies were at war with them. The language you used in your third last para reveals you personal anger for Bose ( may be because of the incident in the court you described) but not an open argument.
How much do you know about Tagore? I am quite sure that you really know very very little about Tagore and his works. To know about how much he means to a Bengali you need to get acquainted with Bengali culture and his works. He is like life-blood of Bengalis. He is known to a Bengali thousand times more than his Nobel prize and Gitanjali. Please read true history (there are lot of letters and articles) to know about his contribution to the revolution and freedom struggle in India and hatred against British Government and then express your opinion. It is so unfortunate and shame that so called educated people like you blog with such irresponsible and presumptions statements!!!
ReplyDeleteI think Mr Katju is acting foolishly because even if he is correct about Gandhi and Bose. Trying to convince foolish people itself is foolishness. Most Indians, in my view, have not developed enough to understand Mr Katju's argument, let alone to appreciate or criticize them. Mr Katju is wasting his time on the foolish people in an attempt to convince that the history of the people who are dead about 70 years ago is incorrect, is nothing but the waste of time. Whether Gandhi was a british stooge or not or whether Bose was a Japanese stooge or not has no importance for most of us. The life of a Doctor, Taxi Driver, Factory Worker or a Lawyer will not change if they agree or disagree with what Mr Katju has stated. I think Mr Katju should come out of past and do something for present. Discussing dead people is utter waste of time.

ReplyDeleteDear Justice Katju,
ReplyDeleteWhile I am aware that Jana Gana Mana was written for King George the Vth to felicitate him to get the Rowlatt Act withdrawn, I have not found a source (i would not say Amar chitra Katha is a source). Also no sources that the Japanese, fascists all right (they had occupied China), would make India its colony.
Sir, you are a very learned man to understand that Mr. Goswami's asking for "sources" meant specific points in any published book, journal, periodical, etc.
Why didn't you post your sources here in your blog?
Sir, your time is not yet too past to defend yourself. We beg you to defend yourself with sources, i.e., book, journal, periodical, etc., the more, the merrier.
Please, Sir, to keep our faith on the judicial system, I beg you to place your sources that led you to your conclusions. Otherwise, there would be other inferences by the common man. And an institution would be tarnished.
You can understand, Sir, without those sources your statements would be termed as baseless rants and there are people who want to see your character tarnished and destroyed. Like some of the posts here.
Sir, there is a specific source in late Nirad Chandra Chaudhuri, in his book "Autobiography of an Unknown Indian Part-II" [ also perhaps called earlier, "Thy Hand Great Anarch" ] wherein it is specifically stated that Late Subhas Bose was distraught after his debacle in The Congress, with the Working Committee and Gandhi forcing him to resign from the President's post, and that led him to commit Harakiri. I could even state the pages.
But only this, nothing more, can be inferred - that he continued his suicidal path and ended up in Siberia, as it is said. It is clear that he went to wrong people for help. You yourself have stated that enemy's enemy is a friend. But that won't support your opinion that he was a what Mr. Goswami and his guests alleged you'd said he was.
There are books that can be used as sources for Gandhi, Example: Dr. Ambedkar's "What Gandhi and the Congress... untouchables" and available as ebook in http://www.ambedkar.org/ambcd/41A.What%20Congress%20and%20Gandhi%20Preface.htm and M.O. Mathai's book on Nehru and other leaders of the Congress in Reminiscences of Nehru Age.
These may be called as sources, not your opinions, Sir. That is destined to antagonise some people against you, and some may specifically want that to happen.
Please sir, defend yourself with many sources and uphold your dignity, sir.
Regards,
Rajib
Mysore
Mr. Katju,
ReplyDeleteYou blocked me in twitter..that is fine. But let me make it clear here..don't think that you can fool others by your claim that you used the expression "running dog" for a meaning used in Chinese language just because you think "90 per cent of Indians are idiots". Don't try to cover up your original intention by trying to find a different meaning in different language. After all you twitted in English and message is conveyed in English language only. You have committed a crime by violating Article 19 (2) of our constitution. You know what..this expression is enough for your final fall from whatever reputation you have earned.
Wren report[edit]
ReplyDeleteIn December 1942, a certain Lt. Col G.W Wren attached to MI2 produced a report outlining the condition of loyalty of the Indian troops in the British Indian Army. Detailed intelligence on the INA, its organisation and the circumstances in which it was found became available at the time from sources defecting into India in the garb of INA agents. The Wren report, with inputs from these defectors, argued that to preserve the loyalty of the army, it was necessary to preserve the loyalty of the Indian officer corps. The report further argued that to counter the INA and the IIL's strategy, it was necessary for Whitehall to make specific commitments to the Indian independence movement that would address the political sentiments of the Indian recruits, and predicted that not doing so risked alienating the British Indian Army from the Raj.
Wren's analysis of the problems facing the British Indian Army, though highly controversial, was supported by later recommendations derived from Noel Irwin's reports following the Eastern Armies debacle at Arakan. Irwin's analysis further supported the notion that although the desertions by the Indian soldiers at Arakan were alarming, it was a purely military problem, and could be addressed to a large extent by making a declaration of a free or freer India similar to the US declaration for Philippines. However, Churchill's, as well as Linlithgow's opposition and outright hostility to any declaration that committed towards India's independence meant the Wren report went unimplemented.[4]
