A Welcome Move: Invitation to Nawaz Sharif

The invitation by Mr. Modi to the Pakistan Prime Minister to attend the oath taking ceremony should be welcomed.

All well meaning people should want good relations between India and Pakistan. We are both poor countries. About 75% people in both countries suffer from poverty, hunger, unemployment, and lack of health care and good education for the masses.

We both presently spend huge amounts on our armed forces. If we have good relations this huge amount of money can be spent on eliminating the abovementioned socio-economic evils and on welfare programmes. If, however, we fight with each other we will continue  to spend huge amounts on armaments ( presently both India and Pakistan are among the 5 top purchasers of arms in the world). India's 2013-14 defence budget was Rs. 2 lakh crores (over $40 billion) of which over 41% was for buying new weapons.

The test of every system is whether it is raising the standard of living of the masses. Poverty, hunger, unemployment, disease, etc have no religion or caste. Therefore India and Pakistan should collaborate in eliminating our massive socio-economic evils, rather than fighting with each other.

  1. Justice Katju, you are not understanding few things, let me explain you. Terrorism or militancy in Pakistan will not allow India and Pakistan to live, trade and travel prosperously. Pakistan has terrorism which is now beyond government and Army control. Both USA and Pakistan are equally responsible for this instability in these two countries.

Pakistan since late 80's have been supporting kashmiri freedom struggle movement in Pakistan for which they have huge support in Pakistan. Pakistani's say India was responsible for break up of East Pakistan because India government sent troops in Bangladesh to defeat Pakistani soldiers. Inside Pakistan few political analyst says Pakistan because it applied force, it itself is responsible for division of East Pakistan. Then there is problem of Siachen, Kashmir which is international disputed territory in UN. Now the main problem, different types of militancy or terrorism.

Pakistan supported terrorism or created safe heavens for militants for kashmir. They use to trail militants and send it to India to destabilize in Jammu as well as Kashmir. Since Pakistan enjoys charity system and Zakaat system, many movement started just like RSS in India which provides social security to Hindus only and also interfere in social and political affairs for social welfare to Hindu community only and they have training camps also. Similarly LET, Jamutul Dawa does lot of social service and had camps for which they got charities from different parts of the world. Then during Afghan war where USA called people from all over world to break USSR, CIA of USA also funded ISI to hire those mujahdin to fight Russia. Thousands came from all over world, one of them was a billionaire from Saudi called Osama. So Al Qaeda for CIA movement to break USSR. For dollars, ISI also send their trained cadre Mujahadin to fight which was used against kashmir freedom struggle movement.

Now the main thing, after USA broke war in Afghanistan after Sep 2001, USA conducted air strike at Tora Bora area and nearby in which many Taliban fled and crossed border and came in Pakistan. As per Pakistan sources, Pakistan never had Taliban they had mujahididins before 2001. Now those taliban came and settled in tribal areas in Pakistan and for immersed in Pakistan society. America did one more blunder they invaded Paksitan and displaced Tribal area people where 9 lakh people got displaced because Pak army and American troops set up their fighting base. Due to fear of lives, those displaced tribal area people joined hands with Al Qaeda and Haqani network which also sneezed in Pakistan through Afghan border. America based on suspicion started killing people via drone, now in tribal area everyone has gun because they have culture and keep it for safety. 80% innocent civilians died because of drone strike of america and they always retaliated back killing innocent civilians and army thinking Pakistan army is fighting american war.

    1. This gave birth to Tehrike Taliban Pakistan which is most lethal group in Pakistan. They directly behead people or army. It is their method of killing. Like Tehrike Talbian, many Taliban groups were formed in Pakistan which started killing Pakistani civilians. Now there are many poor in Pakistan and it is such a discriminative society everyone wants to earn money. Pakistan always protected mujahididns which is anti India group. Many tribals formed their own group under the disguise of kashmir movement struggle, and they started looting banks, kidnapping, asking extortion money from traders. Some were hired by political groups as mafia. Some small became sectarian group started killing minorities and shias which had support of some political parties. This lead to polarization in Pakistan. Now terrorism has flourished in Pakistan. It now had 50-60 militant groups some are funded by international community which dont want peace, and some loot banks or kidnap people.

Pakistan is paying its own price for supporting anti India group called mujahdidns. Now america made their situation worst, It is difficult to identity who are mujahidins, who are TTP, Who are Al Qaeda since everybody shook hands and made America their common enemy.

HAd Pakistan keep zero tolerance towards militancy, HAd they not allowed american forces to enter Pakistan taking dollars... their country would not have suffered this way.

Pakistan leaders sold their nation by taking dollars to world. Unless they create this internal problem, Pakistan remains a very dangerous society and cannot bring peace in this region. It is beyond control now

    2. Now what can India do?

India can say to Pakistan, we want you to punish or stop those anti India groups like LET, Harkatul Falah, SIMI,

      Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan

Area of operations: Traditionally, the Mehsud group of the TTP, which operates from bases in the tribal territory of South Waziristan; has spearheaded militant operations across the north. This changed after the death of leader Baitullah Mehsud in a US drone strike in August 2009. The TTP has since splintered, with new leader Hakimullah Mehsud operating mainly from his native Orakzai Agency. Other Taliban factions are based in the Khyber Agency and, according to media reports, in southern Punjab.
Targets: Pakistani military personnel and civilians - typically suicide bombings of markets.
Support base: The Mehsud tribe and other tribes loyal to it assisted by foreign militants.

      Mullah Nazir Group

      Area of operations: South Waziristan
Targets: The Pakistani military and civilians, as well as US forces in Afghanistan.
Base of support: The Wazir tribe near the town of Wana. The group maintains good relations with the Haqqani Network (see below) and has ties to Mullah Omar.

      Turkistan Bhittani Group

      Area of operations: South Waziristan
Targets: Mainly engaged in a battle with the TTP after splitting from its former ally Baitullah Mehsud in 2007. It is believed to have occasionally targeted US forces in Afghanistan but not Pakistani military personnel or civilians.
Base of support: The Bhittani tribe is the main source of support for leader Turkistan Bhittani. There have been suggestions the group may be backed by Pakistani forces against the TTP.

      Haqqani Network

      Area of operations: North Waziristan
Targets: Almost exclusively US forces in Afghanistan.
Base of support: The Zadran tribe in Afghanistan’s Khost Province.
Widely respected as powerful Mujahedin by tribes across the north since the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by Soviet forces. Support from al-Qaeda and foreign militants; has ties with Mullah Omar, but plans strategy independently.

      Gul Bahadur Group

      Area of operations: North Waziristan
Targets: Pakistani forces in North Waziristan and US troops in Afghanistan
Base of support: The Wazir and Daur tribes in North Waziristan, especially near the town of Miram Shah.

    3. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (North)

Area of operations: All tribal territories, but especially Kurram and Orakzai where there is a Shia population - a minority Muslim sect.
Targets: Pakistani civilians, especially Shias, and military personnel. Attacks on Western nationals in Pakistan.
Base of support: Mainly anti-Shia militant groups from Punjab.

      Lashkar-e-Islam

      Area of operations: Khyber Agency
      Targets: Pakistani civilians
Base of support: The hard-line Deobandi Muslim sect; locked in a battle against militant rivals for control in Khyber.

      Ansar-ul-Islam

      Area of operations: Khyber Agency
      Targets: US forces in Afghanistan
Base of support: The Deobandi and Barelvi sects - especially less hard-line factions. Engaged in battles in Khyber with rival militants.

      Tehrik-i-Nifaz-i-Shariat-i-Mohammadi

Area of operations: Swat Valley, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province; attempts to assert influence in Dir.
Targets: Pakistani civilians - especially government figures, including teachers - and military personnel.
Social roots and base of support: Disillusioned members of Pakistani religious and political parties. The group was set up in 1992. Its involvement in more widespread militancy began after 2002, when key leaders were imprisoned after participating in `jihad’ in Afghanistan. It has split into various factions since then.

      Groups in Punjab

The southern Punjab is a poverty-stricken, orthodox region - much like the north - but the rise of militant groups has followed a slightly different trajectory. Fierce anti-Shia sectarianism, and 'jihad’ aimed at Indian-administered Kashmir, is high on the agenda of these groups.

      The Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (Punjab)

      Area of operations: Countrywide
Targets: Shia Muslims, non-Muslims, foreign nationals, state security forces
Base of support: Sectarian groups in Punjab. It first emerged in the Punjab in the 1990s.

      Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan

      Jaish-e-Mohammad

Area of operations: Mainly Indian-held Kashmir and Afghanistan; some role in fighting in north. Headquartered in the southern Punjab
Targets: Indian forces, Western nationals, non-Muslim Pakistanis
Base of support: Backing from hard-line Muslim factions involved in violence in northwest Pakistan and across the border in Afghanistan.

      Lashkar-e-Taiba

Area of operations: Based in Punjab. Operates in Indian-held Kashmir and possibly Afghanistan
      Targets: Mainly Indian targets
Base of support: Pro-`jihad’ and hard-line Muslim groups. Allegations of links to Pakistani intelligence agencies by media. Heavily involved in post-flood relief work and other charitable work.
