Why I will never write my memoirs

There was a comment on Facebook by someone that I should write my memoirs. I replied that I will never write my memoirs. The person asked why ?

I said that by mentioning just one incident ( the corruption by a Madras High court Judge ) I was furiously attacked by many people. Mentioning all incidents will be opening up a Pandora's box. I have been deep inside the judicial system at several levels ( lawyer, High Court Judge, Chief Justice, and Supreme Court Judge ), and so have seen the darker side of the judicial system intimately. To disclose everything would raise such a storm that I may not be able to withstand it.

So let me remain quiet and preserve my peace of mind.

  1. You can write a memoir that can be published posthumously.

  3. Sir, people of this country shall feel greatly indebted to you, if by writing your 'Memoirs', judiciary is purged even 50% of evils. One must not anticipate favorable or unfavorable reaction of public, while doing his duty selflessly to the nation and society.

    1. By expressing the truth something is being exposed, please understand,Its really difficult just not as you think, it will cost mental peace really. I have never seen Justice Katju making biased statements or Judgments.

Only once he (in the sense the bench) withdrew his Judgment on the remarks of "Talibanisation of India".

So have some patience and post wise comments, i dont think he would delete. How many Judges of SC are communication with peoples much like Justice Katju?

    2. By the way, he retired by SEPT 2011 and today its July 2014 its less than 3 years. Its within the acceptable range, not much delay. Whereas for Justice Lahoti, Justice Sabbarwal and Justice KGB they did not come out public yet. A wise man would say that this is not delay (even if he did not forget those incidents). Its very common to recall the Long past incidents to the human memory.

The darker side of our judicial system must be exposed even though it may be a discomfort for several bigwigs in the judiciary. Judiciary is not a sacred cow.

  8. Honesty and candour will always attacked. I do not agree with you that because of the furore your revelation raised in some quarters you are against any similar eruption if you open out in your memoir
Nothing can be obfuscating than this thought. If you were fearless while in the Court what should hold you back in consternation now? Let the Pandora's box be open.
You will not be doing justice to the society if you prefer not to write a memoir.

    1. It is requested to plz stop bowing down to corrupt people and resting wrong doers as smart, clever or great and treating truthful and honest people as fools.
This state of mind has ruined our country and we need to get out of it.

  11. This nation would be better served if thematic issues as these are flagged and worked through by a group of eminent persons of unimpeachable integrity.

Writing memoirs should not cost Justice Katju his peace of mind and his right to lead a life of his choosing.

The rot runs deep and it is time to stem it with contributions from fearless and honest men as Justice Katju

  12. A backlash was on the cards.A person of your eminence should have been able to deflect or leave the attack or attackers alone. You can't take this too seriously. Irrespective of the timing of the revelation, I thought you showed great courage & did an appreciable job in exposing the irregularities & the muck in judiciary.

Since people believe & have faith in judiciary & the judicial process, they have the right to know if there have been wrong doings. So, kindly revert this idea of not writing memoirs & please come up with some new revelations.

  13. Sir,
You are an influential person with a lot of power with. I hope we can understand the agony of a common man who deals with these corrupt people on daily basis.

You told the world an important fact, but these people instead of taking it seriously and taking some corrective measures they are pointing figures at you only.

In India those people who raise their voice against this corrupt system are treated like this because the corrupt are do powerful in this system that they can influence anything.

Rule of law is just a fiction, it is an imagination just a book to read I see nowhere accept judiciary where rule of law is taken into consideration.

Sir it is therefore requested to please suggest us Indians something so that we can get a country governed by Rule of Law and not by the will of these corrupt politicians.

  14. But we already know enough from your blogs. Your memoir is not needed.

  15. Revered Sir,
I am disheartened to read that you have decided not to disclose your memoirs. We respect your decision but sir in this way you are not sharing the jewels and gems of your profession. If you like it, you may certainly not disclose the controversail one but enrich us by sharing the stories of the honest judges and layers along with light and hearty events of the court proceedings.

  16. Mr. Katju all through your life you remain silent and allowed the corruption to take place in judiciary, you have just started to raise your voice, better late than never, and now you are going to give up that task which can serve the people and this nation by highlighting the shortcoming and other vices of judiciary. Please don't lose your heart. In the fag end of life one has nothing much to lose

  20. While I understand your reservations about the controversy that would be unleashed by a 'tell all' autobiography,I hasten to add that it should be borne in mind that the judiciary is fast losing the credibility that it continued to retain despite depredations by elements from both within and without.
The people of this republic deserve to know the inner workings of the judiciary of this country -warts and all - and none will be most benefited than the judiciary itself, notwithstanding the exposure that the many rotten apples who now adorn prominent positions in the judiciary may have to endure.

As famously put by Justice Louis Brandeis, "sunlight is the best disinfectant"; let the dark corners and shady alleyways of our courts and chambers be flooded with it, such that it leaves it illuminated for evermore.

  21. as you have started, now reveal all as soon as possible.
the corrupt can go to any extent to silence the people with knowledge about their wrong doings and dark sides.
your revelation will be great help to nation in general and judiciary in particular.
