Sarita Devi
I had been critical of Sarita Devi's behaviour at the medal presentation ceremony at the recent Asian Games in South Korea, and I agree with the AIBA chief, Ching-kuo Wu that her behaviour was  totally unacceptable.
That having been said, the question now is : should the AIBA ( the International Amateur Boxing Association ) ban her from participating in boxing competitions ? From the tough words used by Mr. Wu, it seems that some harsh punishment is being contemplated by the AIBA.
Sarita Devi has realized her mistake and has apologized several times. That being so, I think the AIBA should let her off with a stern warning that this kind of misbehaviour will not be tolerated in future.
The AIBA should be reminded of the famous speech on mercy by Portia in Shakespeare's ' Merchant of Venice ' :
" The quality of mercy is not strained
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest
It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes "
