Bihar Liqour ban from 1.4.2016

I thought Nitish Kumar is a sensible man, but I am changing my opinion. He has announced ban on sale of liquor in Bihar from 1.4.2016.

It is common knowledge that such bans are counter productive, and give rise to crime, deaths by drinking illicit liqour, etc. The experience in America, where prohibition was imposed in 1920, and lasted till 1933, was that it gave rise to the mafia gangs which thrived during this period.

Consumption of alcohol will not go down despite this ban, but many people will die by drinking illicit liquor.

Poor people drink liquor to get temporary relief from their miserable life. So the real way to bring down consumption of liquor is to give them decent lives

  1. Sir, I do not agree with your comments. I can give the example of Saudi Arabia and many other gulf countries where liquor is absolutely banned and the crime graph is very very low.

  3. quite agree! it may be successful in the Arab world, but will not get the desired result in India unless one is thinking in terms of extremely harsh deterrents!

  4. sir,
I agree with ur views but somewhere still people have hope that this prohibition might bring peace and harmony with reference to gandhian ideology in directive principles of state policy(article-48) except for medical purpose.

  5. Silly alcohol ban for Bihar! It seems that in star-crossed India, busybodies want to control what others eat and drink.

  8. In this I completely agree with you Mr Katju. Recently I commented on FB: "When all over the world no ban on alcohol is there, are only Indians or Gujaratis or Biharis that moral lot?" "This cannot and will not last long. In Andhra Pradesh also NTR experimented with it but soon had to restore."

  9. Consumption of alcohol must be banned all over India and it can be successful if we implement the laws like Saudi Arabia and many other gulf countries.
