Bhushan and Shivaji


The Bhaktikaal ( roughly 15th to 18th century ) Hindi poets ( Kabir, Sur, Tulsi, Rahim, etc ) wrote for the people, while the succeeding Reetikaal ( 18th to 20th century ) Hindi poets ( Bihari, Keshav, etc ) wrote for kings and aristocrats.

While the Bhaktikaal poets wrote of the tribulations of the people, and offered them solace by bhakti ( because a scientific way out was not then discovered ), the Reetikaal poets emphasised
'shringar' ( beauty ) and often wrote praises of kings and aristocrats.

Among the early Reetikal poets was Bhushan, who wrote panegyrics ( qaseedas ) in honour of Shivaji, whose court he attended

Here is the one he composed on Shivaji's coronation :

इंद्र जिमि जम्भ पर, बाढव सु अम्भ पर
रावण सदंभ पर रघुकुल राज हैं
पउनि वारिवाह पर, शम्भु रत्नाह पर
त्यों सहस्त्रबाहु पर, राम द्विजराज हैं
दावा दुम दण्ड पर, चीता मृगझुंड पर
भूषण वितुण्ड पर जैसे मृगराज हैं
कृष्ण जिमि कंस पर, तेज तिमिरंस पर
त्यों शत्रुवंश पर, शेर शिवराज हैं
