Give reasons, not abuse

I have given detailed reasons why I called Gandhi objectively a British agent and Bose objectively a Japanese agent in a series of posts on facebook and on my blog e.g. ' Gandhi--a British agent ', ' Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose ', ' Britishers set up statue of their agent in London ', ' Alice in Wonderland ', ' Gandhi and Caste ', ' Long live our real freedom fighters ', ' My ideals are Ashok and Akbar, not Gandhi ' ( published in Navbharat Times in Hindi ), etc.

I do not mind criticism, but the critic should point out the flaw in my reasoning, and give his own reasoning. Instead of doing so what has usually been hurled on me is abuse.

I once again request everyone to read my posts, including the one given below, and if he/she wishes to criticize me he/she is welcome, but the person must give reasons, not just abuse or homilies and platitudes

BOL KI LAB AZAD HAIN TERE, BOL ZUBAAN AB TAK TERI HAI

I regard the true freedom fighters of our country as Surya Sen ( Masterda ), and his other compatriots of the Anushilan Samiti and Jugantar, Bhagat Singh, Khudiram Bose, Chandrashekhar Azad ( whose memorial in  Alfred Park in Allahabad I would visit often to bow my head there ), Ashfaqulla, Rajguru, Ram Prasad Bismil ( whose song ' Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai ' is known to many ), etc.

In our national historiography these real patriots  are barely mentioned, they are generally relegated to a footnote, and treated as mavericks, deviants or outsiders, not freedom fighters. That fake ' Mahatma' and his coterie, and that pawn of the Japanese fascists, are depicted as the real freedom fighters.

Gandhi described the militant Indian youth fighting against British Imperialism as ' misguided souls ' . He often said that militant nationalism was injurious to India's struggle for freedom. In reality he knew that if those methods became popular among the Indian masses his own popularity would decline, and his ' Mahatmahood ' may disappear.

When the British sentenced Bhagat Singh to death, Gandhi made no effort to save his life.  He never wrote any letter to the British Viceroy to commute his sentence , nor did he issue any public appeal for this purpose, and he never went to meet Bhagat Singh in jail when the latter was on hunger strike.

By diverting the genuine freedom struggle against the British from its revolutionary path to harmless and nonsensical channels like  satyagrah, Gandhi  was ensuring that British rule over India would continue.

It is said that Gandhi gave us Independence in 1947. This is totally false. In fact by diverting the genuine revolutionary independence struggle against the British in India ( see one of my earlier posts ) to harmless and nonsensical channels like ' Satyagrah ' Gandhi was ensuring that India should not become independent.

Why then did the British leave ? Surely it was not because of the dramas Gandhi was doing ( fasting, salt march, etc ). Does anyone give up an Empire because of this ? Did America win independence from England by satyagrahs, or by bullets fired by George Washington's Continental Army in the American War of independence ( 1775-1781 ) ? Did Latin America win independence from Spain by satyagrah, or by Bolivar's battles ?

No, it was because Germany attacked England in the Second World War and considerably weakened it ( in fact Germany would probably have conquered England if America had not helped it ) that England, realizing that she could not continue holding on to India politically, withdrew. So it is not Gandhi who gave us Independence but Adolf Hitler ( though of course that was not his intention )

I have also called ' Netaji ' Subhas Chandra Bose a Japanese agent, a remark over which many people have got incensed. But If ' Netaji ' was not a Japanese agent, why did he give up the fight against the British when the Japanese surrendered ? He should have carried on a guerilla war against the British.

If the Japanese had been victorious against the British do you seriously think they would have granted independence to India ? No, they would have made India a Japanese colony, and ruthlessly exploited and looted it, as they did to parts of China which were under their occupation..

In fact Bose was being used by the Japanese, and they would have bumped him off the moment his utility for them was over. He was no doubt a brave and personally honest man, but he had become an agent of Japanese fascist imperialism.

The genuine patriots and revolutionaries, who have been sidelined in our history, were as much victims of the Congress Party, which was firmly in Gandhi's grip, as of British Imperialism

  1. Mr. Katju, for the past one month you have been blabbering the same thing again and again. Either you are having some agenda or you're unaware of the true history. You are completely wrong on Bose. You are totally lying when you say that he surrendered after the Japanese surrendered. Here is the reply to all your allegations against Bose by the writer who has dedicated his life in researching and publishing books on Netaji and mysteries surrounding him. If you can give counterarguments then we can accept your views. But you can't.

The Caliphate movement was a reactionary movement to restore the corrupt Caliph in Turkey, when the modernizers like Mustafa Kemal Ataturk removed him. It was disgraceful that Gandhi supported it

    ***************************************

If I give reasoned arguments will you debate me?

The Indian national movement had had it's share of Hindu values based politics. Tilak tried to unify ppl using Hindu festivals etc. Same was done by many leaders of that time. The anti partition movement in Bengal reeked of Hindu elements. They forgot that the large Muslim minority could not relate to terms such as vande mataram as it was perceived to be unislamic to worship the country.

Thus many political ideas failed to gather all groups in diverse India. Gandhi succeeded because his ideas of ahimsa, noon violence, satyagraha etc were not in opposition to any religion. He had in fact explained that his ramrajya was a welfare state like ram had and not the mythical Hindu idea to be implemented.

The political genius of Gandhi dragged in the dalits who were not mobilised by earlier movements which were led by high caste leaders pursuing such ideals. His identifying them as harijans rallied them to his cause.

Further, he didn't make salt because he wanted salt. Salt is essential to every person of any religion. Salt can unify this diverse population without any conflict. And did.

    Coming to khilafat:
Hindu Muslim divide had persisted for some time as a result of British policies and wrong hindutva practises. While announcing the combination of non coorporation and khilafat movement Gandhi could defeat divide and rule and unify everyone into a single movement. This marks perhaps the first and last time we had Hindu Muslim unity in India during the national movement.

  3. mr katju the problem with ur argument is retrospectively one can fit anyone whatever way one wants.when a person work in political field, that person is always working in uncertain situation with all the contradictory forces pulling that person in different direction.
ur field of expertise is judiciary which is a small part of total politics and ur use to work in a limited environment with all the clear rules and regulation.the problem with the arm chair academics like u is, u had spent ur whole life in clinical environment and wish to super imposed it on reality which is politics.
I thinks ur expertise is in judicial matters and not politics and I don't understand why ur involving in matters which are politics.if ur really feel so strongly about issues then best way is to involve in the nitty griity of politics, organise people and work for the change u want it rather than calling names to people who are dead and cant answer u back.finally one can moves tongue whatever way one want, becos it doesn't have a bone in it.

  5. Dear Justice Katju,
We respect you a lot and read your posts regularly. Most often we agree with your razor sharp opinions and feel you're giving words to the many suppressed minds. But this time we want to disagree with your opinion on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who is a hero to many.
We want to be least opinionated here, yet want to present few facts chronologically, as we know (we're not historians so if there are some mistakes, please correct us)
    1. He was Congress President during 1938 and 1939, though had to leave from Congress leadership positions in 1939 following differences with Gandhi.
(He looked for a new avenue to serve the country after that "not so easily acceptable experience by many". He didn't put his ego before country, did he?)
    2. He was subsequently placed under house arrest by the British before escaping from India in 1940.
(That proves he wasn't a British agent either.)
    3. He escaped and went to Germany in April 1941, where the leadership offered unexpected, if sometimes ambivalent, sympathy for the cause of India's independence.
(Is it asylum seeking? Even if one may think so at this stage, it is Germany and not Japan)
    4. In November 1941, with German funds, a Free India Centre was set up in Berlin, and soon a Free India Radio.
(Again in Germany and utilizing German fund for the cause of his own Country. No Japan yet. But this shows he was ready to accept any help (may be at any cost) to serve India and the freedom)
    5. In 1942, Free India Legion, intended to serve as a liberation force for India was formed by him.
(Showed his intent on gathering army to get into war against British. Though an obvious "David vs Goliath" dream, but he he was seeking strong partners too. No clear intention of getting into Guerrilla war strategy, to note he was outside India at that time, which is not a best way to adopt Guerrilla war strategy)
    6. Bose had a meeting wit Hitler in late May 1942, when he was suggested to sought help from Japan, in light of Japanese victories in southeast Asia at that time.
(Idea of Japan as ally got a push in his mind)
    7. Bose boarded a German submarine in February 1943, subsequently he was transferred to a Japanese submarine from which he disembarked in Japanese land in May 1943.
(Now he is in Japan, with already set mind of what he wants. Can we say "on a mission"?)
    8. With Japanese support, he revamped the Indian National Army, whose contribution to the India's freedom can hardly be undermined.
(We think, INA most likely was one important wake up call for the British rulers)
    9. Unfortunately his military effort was short lived and lost steam by late 1944 and early 1945. He chose not to surrender while Japanese did, but rather tried to escape seeking a future in the Soviet Union which he believed to be turning anti-British.
(By this time, he was still jumping wagons with only one motto, to gather enough force to overthrow British from India)
    10. We hardly know for sure what have happened to him and where after that.

So, can one really paint him as Japanese Agent? Looking ahead to read your detailed analysis and reasoning.
