Bolivar is a legendary, heroic figure, known as El Liberatador ( The Liberator ) in Latin America, for his struggles to liberate Latin America from Spanish rule.
Bolivar was a child of the Enlightenment, a student of Rousseau, Voltaire, Montesquieu and Adam Smith, and a champion of liberty and human rights. He was a romantic hero of the early 19th century who on horseback, with sword in hand, slashed his way 20,000 miles across jungle, swamp, desert, and the Andes.to liberate the South American people from the tyrannical Spanish rule. Though born in a very rich family, Bolivar was an idealist, and sacrificed his all for freedom.
At that time, most of South America, except Brazil and a few small countries, were under Spanish rule. Bolivar liberated no less than 6 countries--Venezuela ( his native country ), Columbia, Peru, Equador, Bolivia and Panama--in a series of astonishing marches that led his army across Amazonian rainforests, marshes, mountains, deserts, etc He commanded his troops in hundreds of engagements in a dozen major campaigns across thousands of miles.. His continent spanning campaigns rival those of Alexander the Great, Changez Khan, Timur and Napoleon. He conquered a land of more than 1 million square miles, but then refused to put a crown on his head when he could have.
Bolivar's fight for freedom and independence began when Napoleon deposed the Spanish King, installed his brother.Joseph as King of Spain, and demanded the South American countries under Spanish rule to accept his rule. Bolivar and others refused , and began their struggle for independence from Spain.
This long struggle, marked by many ups and downs, culminated in his victories at Carabobo ( 1821 ) and Junin ( 1824 ).
Having achieved his objective of liberating the Latin American countries from Spanish rule,, Bolivar voluntarily surrendered his dictatorship and command, like the ancient Roman general, Cincinnatus, or like George Washington, and was preparing to go to Europe when he died of tuberculosis in 1830.
Bolivar is a revered figure in Latin Americas, and indeed in the whole world, for his fight for freedom and liberty.
