It was with deep regret and sorrow that I came to know of the death of my elder friend Vinod Mehta.in Delhi.
I have a poor opinion of most journalists, as most of them are totally lacking in ethics, but there are some exceptions, Vinod Mehta being one of them. Of him I can truly say : if there were more like him in the profession, journalism would not be in the state it is in India today.
Vinod Mehta was a brave man. In his memoirs ' Lucknow Boy ' ( whose release function I attended in Delhi ) he has mentioned his criticism in 1975 of Indira Gandhi's fake ' Emergency ', and his offer to resign.from his job as Editor of a magazine to avoid problems for his employer, Mr. Raheja.
As Editor-in-Chief, Vinod Mehta brought up Outlook's standard to a very high level, so much so that I regard it perhaps the best magazine in India today.
May his soul rest in peace
